Stella Artois: A Brewing Legacy of Over 600 Years
Stella Artois is one of the oldest and most revered beers in the world, with a history spanning more than six centuries. This Belgian Pilsner beer is brewed following a traditional recipe and a meticulous process that has been perfected over centuries. The use of Saaz hops, known for their quality and aromatic characteristics, is crucial in giving the beer its distinctive profile. The fermentation process is carried out at low temperatures, typical of pilsner beers, which contributes to its clean and refreshing flavor.
A distinctive feature of Stella Artois is its iconic Chalice glass. Specifically designed to enhance the tasting experience, the Chalice helps maintain the foam and concentrate the beer’s aromas.
History of Stella Artois
Origins in Leuven (1366)
The history of Stella Artois begins in 1366 in the city of Leuven, in the Flemish Brabant region of Belgium. In that year, the Den Hoorn brewery was founded, whose name means “The Horn”. Leuven was already known at that time for its brewing tradition, thanks to the quality of the water and local ingredients, as well as the skill of its brewers. Den Hoorn quickly established itself as a prominent brewery in the region.
The Arrival of Sébastien Artois (1708)
A turning point in the brewery’s history occurred in 1708 when Sébastien Artois became the master brewer at Den Hoorn. His talent and vision took the brewery to new heights. In 1717, Artois acquired the brewery and gave it his name, marking the beginning of the Artois brand. Under his leadership, the brewery thrived and became a cornerstone of the local community.
Birth of Stella Artois (1926)
The name “Stella” was added to the brand in 1926. Originally, Stella Artois was created as a special Christmas beer, and its name, which means “star” in Latin, was chosen to reflect the festive spirit of the season. The red label and star that adorn the bottle were also inspired by this Christmas theme. The beer was so well received that production continued beyond the festive season, becoming a permanent offering from the brewery.
International Expansion
During the 20th century, Stella Artois began to expand internationally. The beer gained popularity in Europe and beyond, thanks to its distinctive flavor and Belgian heritage. The acquisition of Artois by Interbrew, and later the merger of Interbrew with AmBev to form InBev, and finally the creation of Anheuser-Busch InBev, the world’s largest beer manufacturer, helped propel the brand onto the global stage.
New Varieties and Innovation
Although the classic Stella Artois recipe remains the most popular, the brand has introduced new varieties to meet changing consumer demands. These include Stella Artois Cidre, a cider made with high-quality apples, and Stella Artois Liberté, a non-alcoholic beer that offers the same characteristic taste.
Stella Artois has come a long way from its humble beginnings at the Den Hoorn brewery in 1366. Its rich history, combined with an unwavering commitment to quality and innovation, has made Stella Artois one of the most beloved and respected beers worldwide.
